Geonav 3

This is a mobile phone-sized set and despite its small screen size it’s very clear. Single-handed operation very easy, even when mounted in it’s charging cradle.

Constructing a route is simplicity itself. Follow it on the chart display or the highway display – you can select which windows you display from the set-up menu. Tidal current and tidal curves can be shown, the latter either the nearest or any you choose.

Although operation is very instinctive, a little time spent looking at the manual will be rewarded. There’s no keyboard lighting, but familiarisation with the set make this almost irrelevant. The screen is bright and the detail very clear.

PBO review:

“I like this set, which has a very instinctive interface, a comfortable lightweight feel and a bright, clear screen. I’m not so keen on Geonav’s Navionics presentation of the international fixed marine lights, which look like striped lighthouses, but that’s the professional navigator speaking (the Raymarine version of Navionics has a normal fixed light presentation) At £349 including detailed marine charting it’s similarly priced to a 5in fixed chart plotter.”

I bought the Geonav3 to use on a 10 day cruise to supplement the charter boat’s main plotter (which was below decks). I got the item for £299 and as this included the Navionics Gold charts I felt it was a good price. The Geonav was really easy to use, even after only glancing at the instructions. The screen was brilliant to use and crystal clear – the small size was not really an issue. There are only the 5 buttons to use and they are a good size and easy to use, although the supplied cover meant the my pudgy fingers sometime pressed the wrong one – but this was not great problem. Putting in a route was very easy. However, sometimes when you did not hit a waypoint when sailing it did not move onto the next one so the prvious WP had to be deleted. I used the Geonav ‘doing’ the little ports along the Normandy coast and it proved very easy to use especially for piloting in and out. It also helped with the tidal heights for these secondary ports.

Overall a great bit of kit which will get used time and again.
